I have a week off work, and you know what that means... Also, I went and downloaded the top 50 artists for the last 6 months for each of the following Last.fm accounts: JTMILLER, acegikmo313, bsoric, websafepallet, Raylawley, maceobennett, stretchilism, tasman_28, spligitmoose and got a thumbnail picture for just about all of them, so most of the songs you guys upload should hopefully have pictures. I don't know if there are any more Wilangans on last.fm, but if there are I can get their favourite bands and add them as well. As Windows' version of Impact (the font) doesn't render too well in Internet Explorer, I let the user choose from that or Arial. Then I got carried away and added Comic Sans MS, Onyx and that one in the second picture whose name escapes me. Odds are good I'll find some more Windows fonts that I like and add them too. A few of the colour schemes need work (those being red, orange and yellow) but I suck at picking colours so if anyone else wants to come up with some good ones, there's 4 colours to each theme (those being the background colour, the box-background colour, the box-border colour (which is also the colour of bits of text) and the text colour. Simon brought up the possibility of having something to stop too many similar songs being uploaded (so we don't end up with Blake's Beatles collection being played back-to-back at 5 in the morning again) and we've been trying to come up with a simple algorithm that'll let us do that. It's made more complicated by the fact that relatively few people obsessively tag their music collections with genres and years etc. At the moment I'm thinking "subtract a couple of votes for every time the song's been played, subtract a vote for every song by the same artist in the playlist" but that's been changing around a lot. And that's all I can think of for the moment. Consider yourself updated.

Well, as most if not all of you know, I recently installed XP on my machine. I've been using Winamp as my music player of choice due to its ease of use and compatibility with my awesome keyboard. While admiring its interface, sitting there all fullscreened and pretty-like, I started thinking about the music box, and how much more awesome it'd look if I changed the UI again. <a href="http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u49/bsoric/ideaV2.png">http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u49/bsoric/ideaV2.png</a> This is what I've come up with. If you'll notice, in the top left of the UI there's space for a picture. For obvious reasons, I don't want to rely on the user to upload their own images and we won't have an internet connection, so I'll have to download the images beforehand and use a script to thumbnail them (not a problem what with my awesome coding skills.) For some stupid reason, I deleted all the songs I'd had on my laptop that were downloaded from the last Wilanga, so now I have no list of the bands likely to be uploaded. And now to the point of my email: I need band names! Lots and lots of band names! I can download images from Last.fm and shrink them, but I have no idea what the kids are listening to these days and what people are going to be uploading. Obviously I'm not going to get every song on there covered, but it'd be nice to have a decent percentage. Also, I'd like to know if you have any suggestions for changes. I'd like to get all the work out of the way early so I don't have to worry about it next holidays. Thanks, Brett

From what I can tell, Direct Connect and the music software, as well as the low-level network stuff is working. I think I'm also going to stick a copy of Firefox on the server in case there are people still on IE 6. I might test play Unreal Tournament 2004 against myself later on, but I'm fairly confident the traditional Wilanga network troubles won't be so much of an issue this year.

Okay, sorry I haven't been talking, ain't checked this account in a while. Busy with work etc. (I've done about 6 hours overtime in three days )= ) Anyhoo, About the club thing, this would mean we need a president, treasurer, secratary, etc. which doesn't really fit with a LAN style group, so it is possible for us to have different positions, or mixed positions? Eg, Secratary, who also handles and advises the network, President who also handles mosto f the stuff (ACE!:P), Treasurer who handles the musicbox and now server, etc. When it comes to having to hold an AGM, we could just do that in the couple of hours before wiLANga starts, on every second wiLANga? On the topic of a legal waiver, while it is a good idea, I do wonder how much it would cost. Another thing is that it still does not completely cover us. AFAIK, a waiver will be ignored by a court is we are to blame for gross negligence etc. I would suggest insurance. Again, ASAIB, the halls insurance would only cover what they provide and maintain. Anything WE bring in (computers, powerboards, etc.) that fails / causes injury or damage is OUR PROBLEM, not theirs. They're only hiring out the hall to us.
